GIVE@WAY & REVIEW: The Way We Fall by Megan Crewe @megancrewe @DisneyHyperion

Description

It starts with an itch you just can't shake. Then comes a fever and a tickle in your throat. A few days later, you'll be blabbing your secrets and chatting with strangers like they’re old friends. Three more, and the paranoid hallucinations kick in.
And then you're dead.
When a deadly virus begins to sweep through sixteen-year-old Kaelyn’s community, the government quarantines her island—no one can leave, and no one can come back.
Those still healthy must fight for dwindling supplies, or lose all chance of survival. As everything familiar comes crashing down, Kaelyn joins forces with a former rival and discovers a new love in the midst of heartbreak. When the virus starts to rob her of friends and family, she clings to the belief that there must be a way to save the people she holds dearest.
Because how will she go on if there isn't?

Megan Crewe crafts a powerful and gripping exploration of self-preservation, first love, and hope. Poignant and dizzying, this heart-wrenching story of one girl’s bravery and unbeatable spirit will leave readers fervently awaiting the next book in this standout new series.

About The Author

Like many authors, Megan Crewe finds writing about herself much more difficult than making things up. A few definite facts: she lives in Toronto, Canada with her husband and two cats (and does on occasion say "eh"), she tutors children and teens with special needs, and she has yet to make friends with a ghost, though she welcomes the opportunity. Her first novel, GIVE UP THE GHOST, was published by Henry Holt in 2009 and is now out in paperback. Her second novel, THE WAY WE FALL, is coming in January 2012 from Disney-Hyperion.

MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Kaelyn's family has moved from Toronto to an island that is a vacation spot where her father has a new job doing microbiological research.  She makes new friends, finds her first love, (Leo),  and in a series of diary entries and notes written to Leo who has moved off the island.  There, a virus is taking over the island and when it turns deadly, the government closes off the area to everyone. No one can leave and they are forced to deal with shortages, illness and loss of communication to the outside world.  It starts out with cold like symptoms, quickly proceeds to a high fever with delusions and then death.  So with the world crashing down around her, Kaelyn must quickly adapt to survive.

This whole plot would make an amazing Twilight Zone episode.  They way it is written conveys clear imagery of a perfect world gone mad with characters that are all too real.  Kaelyn is one of a handful that survives the virus and in the process loses her mother and later her father.  In a sense it becomes almost like Lord of the Flies, where teens are taking on grown up roles, with some being good and others becoming self serving and cruel. Kaelyn also forms a tenuous relationship with Tessa, her rival for Leo's affections.  Tessa is a perfect counter point to Kaelyn with her love of plants and both seem to be on the same level intellectually.

I adored the way it was written in a diary form since it seemed much more personal with a journalistic approach to the story telling. Kaelyn is forced to face all of her worst fears along with the rest of the town.  Of course, the guys split into two factions - good versus evil -- where one group helps out and the other devolves into thugs.  Her brother is another interesting point which I would have liked to explore more, but his appearances are brief.  There are some seriously sad parts to this book, but it also uplifting at the same time.  This is one of those books that you must read in one sitting since you will be dying (cough) to find out what happens next.

BOOK TRAILER TUESDAY: The Disenchantments by Nina LaCour @nina_lacour @penguinteen

REVIEW: Bewitching by Alex Flinn @harperteen

Book Description

The Kendra Chronicles February 14, 2012

"It is the story of Kendra and her first 300 or so years of life. In Bewitching, Kendra ponders whether to help out a modern day plain-looking stepsister, while also reflecting on her experiences in the 1666 British plague, the court of Louis XV, and on the Titanic." (Source: author's Facebook intro  & website)

Bewitching can be a beast. . .

Once, I put a curse on a beastly and arrogant high school boy. That one turned out all right. Others didn’t.

I go to a new school now—one where no one knows that I should have graduated long ago. I’m not still here because I’m stupid; I just don’t age.

You see, I’m immortal. And I pretty much know everything after hundreds of years —except for when to take my powers and butt out.

I want to help, but things just go awry in ways I could never predict. Like when I tried to free some children from a gingerbread house and ended up being hanged. After I came back from the dead (Immortal, remember?!), I tried to play matchmaker for a French prince and ended up banished from France forever. And that little mermaid I found in the Titanic lifeboat? I don’t even want to think about it.

Now, a girl named Emma needs me. I probably shouldn’t get involved, but her gorgeous stepsister is conniving to the core. I think I have just the thing to fix that girl and it isn’t an enchanted pumpkin. Although you never know what will happen when I start ….

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

If you read Beastly, you will remember Kendra was the witch that had a very important supporting role.  Kendra is an immortal witch and her story starts out with a retelling of Hansel and Gretel (my first two dachshunds!) where Kendra and her brother are the only survivors in her family after the plague wipes out most of her town. The story weaves back and forth between a Cinderella in current times with bits and pieces of her earlier existence during the early 1700 and the French Court and a sweet story about the Princess and the Pea.  She is always trying to help people and do good with her powers but through the ages, she finds that sometimes things don't turn out how she would like them to.  Her latest project is Emma and her step sister who is truly evil and out to ruin Emma's life. Kendra sees this and tries to help Emma cope with the ugly center of her beautiful step sister.

The story also make a side trip to visit the Titanic and place The Little Mermaid on board.  This one does not have a happy ending.  Then it is back to current times where Emma has figured out exactly who Kendra is and that is a witch.  Emma tries not to take advantage of Kendra's powers as her own personal fairy godmother which is a really nice touch.  I really loved how everything in the story meshed together to create a cohesive story.

The character of Emma is nicely done and I adored the fact that she was a bookworm which works in her favor for a change!  I was really cheering for Emma through all her trials and would love to read more about her.  Overall, this should appeal to younger teens since there are things happening in the book that occur in their everyday life like having to deal with the mean girls at school, first love and not feeling good about yourself.  There are mentions of drinking, allusions to sex but mostly stuff that kids see on television today.

MY THOUGHTS
LIKED IT

Ellie is still trying to have a normal high school life while hunting demons and practicing fighting techniques with her Guardian, Will.  She longs for a relationship with Will and like any teen age girl, moons over him.  As bits and pieces of her past lives come forward, she learns that a relationship with Will just isn't in the cards because he is forbidden to be anything more than her protector.  The evil demons are becoming more and more aggressive, attacking in daylight and out for blood.  Literally out for Ellie's blood.  That part about her blood is truly an interesting twist towards the end of the story.

I enjoyed this first in this series and it reminded me a bit of Buffy and there are sparks of brilliance in the dialogue but the whole story was a bit slow for me.  I really like the characters and when the action kicks into high gear, it is a wonderful thing!  Ellie also has a new admirer in the form of a demon named Cadan.  He is dark and full of fun where Will is light and sweetness.  I can see he is a real match for Ellie since Will is pretty much off limits for her.  Of course there is an epic battle and you are left wondering who the victor will be in this fight between good and evil since the ending is not complete where it leaves off.

REVIEW: The Disenchantments by Nina LaCour @DuttonBooks @nina_lacour

    Book Description

    February 16, 2012
Colby and Bev have a long-standing pact: graduate, hit the road with Bev's band, and then spend the year wandering around Europe. But moments after the tour kicks off, Bev makes a shocking announcement: she's abandoning their plans - and Colby - to start college in the fall.

But the show must go on and The Disenchantments weave through the Pacific Northwest, playing in small towns and dingy venues, while roadie- Colby struggles to deal with Bev's already-growing distance and the most important question of all: what's next?

Morris Award–finalist Nina LaCour draws together the beauty and influences of music and art to brilliantly capture a group of friends on the brink of the rest of their lives.

    MY THOUGHTS

    LOVED IT

Colby is in love with his best friend Bev who is in a band called The Disenchantments. They have made plans to tour at the end of high school before moving on with their adult lives, to college and for Colby to visit his mother now living in France and separated from his father.  His father is a musician that at one time was pretty well known.  Bev had gone along with Colby's plans to visit his mother and then backpack through out Europe before deciding what to do with the rest of theirs lives.  So when Bev tells Colby she is accepted into art school, his life unravels and he must now make plans on his own.

The story takes place while the band is winding it's way from San Francisco to Seattle and Portland, stopping here and there to play at coffee houses, bars, rec centers or where ever they can find a place.  They meet some interesting people along the way but what really grabbed me was that Colby's mother is an artist and had painted the cover of his father best known work.  He finds a tattoo artist that has a picture of a man with the art work as a tattoo, so it becomes his quest to find the man and understand what made him get the tattoo.

The story winds around much like the path the band is taking in their travels, not straight and with no clear purpose except to get from one point to another and deposit one of the band members at her college.  There were parts that are a bit existentialist and really seemed to serve no purpose except to wonder why Bev isn't honest with Colby and just goes along with him by agreeing they should go see his mom when she has been making other plans all along.  Overall, it is a great look at what happens to kids once they start becoming adults and how friends become disjointed once they leave their protected existence in high school.

    GIVE@WAY & REVIEW: Hallowed by Cynthia Hand @harperteen @cynthiahand

    Book Description

    Unearthly January 17, 2012
For months Clara Gardner trained to face the fire from her visions, but she wasn’t prepared for the choice she had to make that day. And in the aftermath, she discovered that nothing about being part angel is as straightforward as she thought.
Now, torn between her love for Tucker and her complicated feelings about the roles she and Christian seem destined to play in a world that is both dangerous and beautiful, Clara struggles with a shocking revelation: Someone she loves will die in a matter of months. With her future uncertain, the only thing Clara knows for sure is that the fire was just the beginning.
In this compelling sequel to Unearthly, Cynthia Hand captures the joy of first love, the anguish of loss, and the confusion of becoming who you are.

    About the Author

Cynthia Hand is a native of southeastern Idaho and currently lives with her husband and two children in Southern California, where she teaches writing at Pepperdine University. She has graduate degrees in creative writing from Boise State University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Instead of a muse, Cynthia has a guardian angel named Buster. He wears a Stetson in place of a halo, prefers a beat-up pickup truck to flying, and loves to correct Cynthia’s grammar.

    MY THOUGHTS
    LOVED IT

*** spoilers if you haven't read Unearthly ***

Clara is still conflicted about her decision to save Tucker and let Christian fend for himself during the fire. She questions her purpose and what exactly she should have done.  Patience, my dear reader, it all will be revealed and then you will be stuck wanting to know the answer to even more questions!  ARGHHH!  I loved Unearthly so much and the way the words just flowed together and this installment matches that one in tempo nicely.  So after finishing this one, I now have even more questions and even more about what will come in the next book.

Clara still thinks Tucker is the perfect guy for her and in a lot of ways he really is.  He gets her off beat sense of humor filled with sarcastic comments.  He respects her and wants to see her fulfill her purpose even if that means she will never be the perfect girl for him.  He is just an all around good guy, especially for a teenager and especially for a guy.  I have to give giant kudos to the author for making him three dimensional and well rounded as well as believable.  The incredible part about this story is that I have even developed feelings for Christian, that way-too-perfect person that has some secrets of his own.  Oh what a tangled web of a triangle romance that has now been woven between Christian, Clara and Tucker!

My other fav character of Angie plays a wonderful supporting role in making Clara think about what is going on with her life and that the fact her mother keeps silent about just exactly what her purpose is makes it more interesting.  I would adore a spin off of Angela or even more of her in the next book.  Jeffrey and Wendy are pretty much a walk on in this one and I kind of miss them.  I don't understand how such a typical teenage triangle could make me enjoy a story line like this since it is a real staple of young adult fiction these days, but the way Hand puts the words together make me want to read about how Clara brushes her teeth and even mundane things become truly heartfelt and interesting.  I am seriously too old to be swept away by a romance like this, but the whole thing is just a really wonderful read.
