The Hunger Games and Green Reading

This article was originally publisher on Eco Libris Blog here

The Hunger Games and Green Reading

"The Hunger Games" had a record box office opening, taking in $155 million in U.S. ticket sales over the last weekend and setting up what promises to be one of the biggest film franchises of this decade. The movie is based on the book The Hunger Games, the first novel in the Hunger Games trilogy written by Susan Collins. The success of the movie helps boost the sales of the trilogy and Scholastic, the publisher of the Hunger Games Trilogy announced yesterday that there were 36.5 million copies of the bestselling trilogy in print, a 55 percent jump from the 23.5 million copies in print at the start of 2012.

Why I'm telling you all of this? Because I believe The Hunger Games phenomenon provides some important and valuable lessons for everyone who is interested in making books greener.

The Hunger GamesLet's start with a fact: According to Lisa Serra, Director of Paper Procurement at Scholastic, the hardcover copies of the three books in the series (The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay)are printed on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of Custody-certified text stock containing 20 percent post-consumer fiber (source: Joshua Martin, Environmental Paper Network Director).

Now, let's move on to three assumptions:
1. If you are interested in reading one of the Hunger Games, most chances are that you don't find it too important what paper it is printed on - you won't look for another book if you will find out the trilogy is printed on 100 percent virgin paper, just like you won't buy it only because it's printed on 20 percent FSC-certified paper or even if it's 100 percent recycled paper. In other words: The sustainability level of the paper will not be a factor in your decision. Most chances are that you probably won't even think about it.

2. Those readers who will be concerned with the issue of the paper might consider reading the Hunger Games electronic version - the e-book costs just like the paperback ($5) and no paper is used at all. Couldn't it get any greener than that?

3. Scholastic probably knows that the fact it is using 20 percent FSC-certified paper doesn't really make a difference for the majority of readers. Most of them probably are not even aware to the fact that Scholastic is making this effort, or to the fact that after making significant progress toward its original targets for 2012, Scholastic decided to increase its 2012 goal from 30% FSC-certified paper to 35%.

As we already know a book is a unique product - it's not like toothpaste or a cleaning product where customers can switch to a competing product that is more sustainable and provide them a better value. If they want a certain book, they will just get it and there's no better example right now than the Hunger Games. Just think about yourself - would you avoid purchasing the Hunger Games just because it's printed on 80 percent virgin paper? Probably not.

You might be considering reading it on an e-reader or even going to the library to get a copy or e-copy of the book, but you certainly won't give it up for 'green' reasons per se.

So what lessons can we learn from the example of the Hunger Games and what actions can we take to apply them?

1. Readers will not be the drivers of change when it comes to printing books on a more sustainable paper (i.e. FSC-certified or recycled paper). Nevertheless, it is important to keep educating them about the impacts of paper, so even if it won't be a substantial factor in their decision making, they will still be aware of it.

2. Readers are moving to e-reading and many of them believe it is also a greener alternative since no paper is involved. It is important to make sure readers will know it's not always the case and be aware that e-reading also has its own footprint. It's also important to encourage readers to demand companies like Amazon to disclose the environmental impacts of the e-readers they sell.

3. Although readers might not be a major driver for change, publishers should make efforts to inform them on their efforts to green up their operations, especially when there is what to report on. Scholastic, for example, should try to make sure every reader of the Hunger Games in its paper version would know that the book is printed using 20 percent FSC-certified paper.

4. Publishers should think of their efforts to make their books more sustainable in terms of stakeholder engagement. Right now it looks like their best shot to generate both tangible and intangible rewards out of these efforts. Just think about the RAN campaign against publishers printing on linked to Indonesian rainforest destruction (Scholastic by the way was among RAN's recommended publishers) or the trouble Gibson Guitars got into when they were accused in violating the Lacey Act, and you can see how stakeholder engagement provide a great monetary incentive to shift to FSC-certified any recycled paper.

5. We still don't have the best answers to the question how to make reading more sustainable - technology provides hope and stakeholder engagement provide incentives, but it's still not enough to drive a change fast enough. Trees are still been cut in an unsustainable way and we know it can be avoided. We just need to keep figuring out how. Any ideas?

REVIEW: Immortal City by Scott Speer @RazorbillBooks

Book Description

Immortal City April 3, 2012
Jackson Godspeed is the hottest young Angel in a city filled with them. He's days away from becoming a full Guardian, and people around the world are already competing for the chance to be watched over by him. Everyone's obsessed with the Angels and the lucky people they protect - everyone except for Madison Montgomery.

Maddy's the one girl in Angel City who doesn't breathlessly follow the Angels on TV and gossip blogs. When she meets Jackson, she doesn't recognize him. But Jackson is instantly captivated by her, and against all odds the two fall in love.

Maddy is swiftly caught up in Jackson's scene, a world of glamour, paparazzi - and murder. A serial killer is on the loose, leaving dead Angels' wings for the police to find on the Walk of Fame. Even the Guardians are powerless to protect themselves in the face of this threat … and this time it's up to Maddy to save Jackson.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

This story is a unique entry into the angel versus demon theme that has become so popular lately.  Told is an almost People-esqe fashion, the story combines brand name dropping with extra beautiful people as angels who aren't quite as honorable as they should be.  The angels have made themselves known to mankind and as guardians, they now work for those who can afford their protection services.  For enough money, you can pay them to save your life.  If this all sounds not quite as altruistic as angel lore, you are correct and that is the fun part about this book:  angels that profit and are a bit bad!

The story centers around Jackson Godspeed, his ex, Vivian and the girl next door named Maddy.  Maddy is an orphan, living with her uncle and working as a waitress in his restaurant. They are broke and Maddy knows she will be lucky if she gets to go to college.  Los Angeles has been renamed as the City of Angels, literally, since this is now where they congregate.  She pays no attention to the rock star angels unlike the majority of her school mates.  When fate throw Jacks into Maddy's life she finds herself infatuated with this immortal creature, but doesn't fully buy into the lifestyle of the rich and famous.

Maddy finds herself in the middle of an angelic war when she herself is found be a missing link between the human and angelic worlds.  There is a war unfolding and with Maddy's recently discovered skills and gifts, she could be the turning point in the battle.  This book was a truly happy accident that I was able to read since I really enjoyed the whole thing and now look forward to the sequel.

GIVEAWAY & REVIEW: DJ Rising by Love Maia @lbkids

    Book Description

    February 6, 2012
The first thing I hear is music. The first thing I've always heard is music.
Meet Marley, an unassuming high school junior who breathes in music like oxygen. In between caring for his heroin-addicted mother, and keeping his scholarship at a fancy prep school, he dreams of becoming a professional DJ.

When chance lands Marley his first real DJ job, his career as "DJ Ice" suddenly skyrockets. But when heart-rending disaster at home brings Marley crashing back down to earth, he is torn between obligation and following his dreams.

    AAbout the Author

Love Maia has worked construction, flown planes, and starred in an infomercial. As a writer, she relates deeply to her main character, Marley, sharing his passion for music and his belief in dreaming big. She loves the freeing energy of the club world, as well as pizza, kickboxing, butterflies, death metal, and underground hip-hop. When not hard at work on her next novel, Love can be found playing drums in an alternative rock band at various bars and clubs around San Francisco.

    MY THOUGHTS
    LOVED IT
Marley, a junior in high school that has an unusual after school job as a DJ.  He can mix songs on the fly, creating new music and soon becomes in demand.  He also must balance his new career with caring for his heroin addicted mother while keeping up his scholarship to a private prep school.  He tries desperately to hold it all together and at the same time trying to make a better life for his family.  I don't know much about the DJ world, but the descriptions in this book are so fascinating. Love Maia does a wonderful job creating this world and the characters that populate it are complex while easy to connect with.  I was almost in tears a few times while reading this.  I just felt heartbroken for Marley and all that he had to deal with.  At the same time, his smart mouth had me laughing a bit with his banter.  Maia is a new author to watch!

BOOKS TO MOVIES -- The Host by Stephanie Meyer

This won't be released until March 2013, and I can only hope that the movie does the book justice.  I didn't really care for the Twilight books, but I ADORED The Host.  It was creepy and full of page turning goodness.  Yes, it is an adult book, but I think it is perfect for older teens.  If you have read the book, the trailer makes perfect sense.  If you haven't -- well it should make you a bit curious.

Waiting on Wednesday: Underworld by Meg Cabot @megcabot @Scholastic

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

    This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

    Book Description

    May 8, 2012 Abandon (Book 2)
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Meg Cabot, the dark reimagining of the Persephone myth begun in ABANDON continues ... into the Underworld.

    Seventeen-year-old Pierce Oliviera isn't dead.

    Not this time.

But she is being held against her will in the dim, twilit world between heaven and hell, where the spirits of the deceased wait before embarking upon their final journey.

Her captor, John Hayden, claims it's for her own safety. Because not all the departed are dear. Some are so unhappy with where they ended up after leaving the Underworld, they've come back as Furies, intent on vengeance . . . on the one who sent them there and on the one whom he loves.

But while Pierce might be safe from the Furies in the Underworld, far worse dangers could be lurking for her there . . . and they might have more to do with its ruler than with his enemies.

And unless Pierce is careful, this time there'll be no escape.
Totally adored Abandon, which it seems like I read ages ago. I really want this one, so if the internet gods are listening to me, PLEASE?

REVIEW: Croak by Gina Damico @ginadamico @HMHCo

    Book Description
Sixteen-year-old Lex Bartleby has sucker-punched her last classmate. Fed up with her punkish, wild behavior, her parents ship her off to upstate New York to live with her Uncle Mort for the summer, hoping that a few months of dirty farm work will whip her back into shape. But Uncle Mort’s true occupation is much dirtier than that of shoveling manure.

He’s a Grim Reaper. And he’s going to teach her the family business.

Lex quickly assimilates into the peculiar world of Croak, a town populated entirely by reapers who deliver souls from this life to the next. Along with her infuriating yet intriguing partner Driggs and a rockstar crew of fellow Grim apprentices, Lex is soon zapping her Targets like a natural born Killer.

Yet her innate ability morphs into an unchecked desire for justice—or is it vengeance?—whenever she’s forced to Kill a murder victim, craving to stop the attackers before they can strike again. So when people start to die—that is, people who aren’t supposed to be dying, people who have committed grievous crimes against the innocent—Lex’s curiosity is piqued. Her obsession grows as the bodies pile up, and a troubling question begins to swirl through her mind: if she succeeds in tracking down the murderer, will she stop the carnage—or will she ditch Croak and join in?

    About the Author
    From Goodreads:
I grew up under four feet of snow in Syracuse, New York. I received a degree in theater and sociology from Boston College, where I was active with the Committee for Creative Enactments, a murder mystery improv comedy troupe that may or may not have sparked my interest in wildly improbably bloodshed. I have since worked as a tour guide, transcriptionist, theater house manager, scenic artist, movie extra, office troll, retail monkey, yarn hawker, and breadmonger. I live in Boston with my husband, two cats, and a closet full of black hoodies.

    MY THOUGHTS
    ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT
Lex has uncontrollable urges to hurt people almost to the point of killing them.  She has an almost superhuman strength about her, so just as she is about to be kicked out of school, her parents ship her off to her uncle's farm where they think some good old fashioned work will help her contain her violent tendencies.  All except Uncle Mort doesn't have farm chores in mind for Lex. He know she has all  the qualities to become an excellent grim reaper, just like he is.  Lex falls in line with her new life strategy and meet people her age who understand her.  Not as well as her twin, Cordy, but it is nice not to hide her newly discovered gifts any longer.  I love the fact that they are named after Lexington and Concord, from the Revolutionary War.
Uncle Mort has teamed her up with Driggs, another reaper misfit, and things are really starting to fall into place when the pair discover that people are dying and no one knows the cause of death.  They begin to suspect that the murderer is actually another reaper since these people are scheduled to die.  The story quickly because a romantic paranormal thriller with the clock ticking as they try to discover who is doing the deed as Lex and Driggs slowly find that they are in love.  The story reminded me a bit of Dead Like Me that ran on television years ago about a teenage reaper mixed in with a bit of Christopher Moore weirdness and humor.
I just adored the writing and how everything flowed, especially with my favorite thing on earth: snark and sarcasm.  OH MY!  What a treat this story was!  I immediately got right into Lex and her whole world which contained a bit of Harry Potter magical elements as well.  Lex is one of those characters that you can easily identify with, she isn't perfect and she knows it.  The other characters in the book come from broken homes and Lex is almost set aside since she comes from a loving home.  She questions authority, she is extremely curious and she does end up finally becoming comfortable in her own skin.  The evil Zara is an excellent foil to Lex's goodness.  Now, I can't wait for the follow up, Scorch that will be released next September.  It is going to be a long summer wait.

Claymation strikes again, from the director who brought us Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit. In addition to the above trio, other notable actors lending their voices include Imelda Staunton, Brendan Gleeson, Brian Blessed, and Lenny Henry. Author DeFoe—not to be confused with Daniel—wrote the screenplay.

I ADORE claymation and especially loved Wallace and Gromit, so I am really looking forward to this one!

Teen Choice Award: VOTE for THE DAUGHTER OF SMOKE & BONES @lbkids @lainitaylor

From Little Brown Books for Young Readers:

Voting is OPEN for the 2012 Children's Choice Book Awards, and Daughter of Smoke and Bone is up for Teen Choice Book of the Year! At Little, Brown, we're thrilled about the nomination and can't wait to further spread the word about Laini's spellbinding novel. Thank you to all of you who blogged, tweeted and posted about Daughter of Smoke and Bone—YOU have all been so instrumental in the book's success in the blogosphere.

Here is a note from Laini:

Dear readers, Daughter of Smoke & Bone has been out in the world now for almost half a year, and it has been the best almost half a year of my writing life. The support I've felt from the online community has had the effect, so many times, of energizing me in writing the sequel (which I can't wait to give you!). Thank you for loving Karou and Brimstone and Akiva and Zuzana and Issa and even Kaz. I'm thrilled that Daughter is in the running for Children's Book Council Teen Book of the Year. With such an amazing field of contenders, it's a huge honor to be in the final round, all the more so because it is an honor awarded by reader votes. *pinches self.* Thank you so much to everyone who has read and recommended my book, and possibly dyed their hair blue (or wished they could) and daydreamed of Prague. You can show your support again on 3/14 by voting in the final round. I'm showing great restraint in not plaguing the competition with a scourge of scuppies! Thank you so very much!

    All best,
    Laini Taylor

More information about the award, the other finalists and the Children's Book Week can be found here: http://www.bookweekonline.com. Voting is open from March 14-May 3.

    GO VOTE!
