GIVEAWAY Authors Are Rock Stars: JERI SMITH-READY+ the SHADE BOYS @jsmithready @moore_zachary @keeley_logan @connelly_martin

Please Welcome, ROCK STAR AUTHOR:

JERI SMITH-READY!

Jeri is one of my favorite authors.  I first discovered her from the WVMP series about vamps, weres and others running a radio station, I was in LOVE.  She blends her love of music with wonderful characters that are unique and believable.  So when she started a young adult series, starring a kid in a band and mentions all of my favorite artists, well, you know this is a must read for me!  Check out her website HERE.  Her books always have a message of hope for no matter how rough life becomes, music can always get you through it.

Special shout outs to Two Chicks on Books and Fiktshun for organizing this special event.  These girls put together an awe inspiring tour for young adult authors and I am honored to be participating.

Now, on to the good stuff....

Please welcome the SHADE BOYS:

ZACHARY
LOGAN
MARTIN

Zachary: Cheers for asking all three of us SHADEboys to do a joint interview! We chat a lot on Twitter with readers and with one another, and we’ve even interviewed people ourselves. But we’re pure chuffed to yatter on endlessly in an official capacity.

Logan: Translation: that means we’re psyched to be talking on an actual blog. In fact, I’m SO stoked, I’ll even use the Shift key, which I normally don’t do on Twitter or on the SHADEboys tumblr. I either go ALL CAPS or all lower case, cuz I’m not a halfway sorta guy. Also, it’s kind of a thing.

Martin: Are we recording yet? When do I have to stop saying ****?

Zachary: Thirty seconds ago.

Martin: Oh. Sorry.

Zachary: Anyway, a brief introduction for those who don’t know us. I’m Zachary Moore, one of the main characters in the SHADE trilogy by The Woman Upstairs, aka Jeri Smith-Ready. I’m from Glasgow, Scotland; I love astronomy and real football; and I have a massive weakness for chocolate.

Like the main character and love of my life, Aura, I’m 16 at the start of the series and 18 at the end. I was the last person born before the Shift, which means everyone younger than I (starting with Aura) can see ghosts. But I can’t, except when…well, that’s a secret.

Logan: Logan Keeley here. I’m forever 17, since I died, like, an hour after my birthday. That’s not really a spoiler, since it happens at the beginning of the first book, which totally sucked (my dying, not the book). I’m from Baltimore, I love music and REAL-real football (i.e., not soccer). Most of all I like attention. Which makes being a ghost really hard, but makes being on Twitter awesome.

Martin: I’m Martin Connelly, Zachary’s best mate. I’m only in SHINE, the last book in the trilogy, which means one day I’ll get my own spinoff series!

Logan: Dream on, dude. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a short story like I did.

Martin: But Zachary’s getting a novella. So that means each SHADEboy gets a bigger spotlight than the last. Be nice and I’ll let you write the soundtrack for my action-film franchise.

Logan: Now THAT would be cool. So…are we supposed to get asked stuff?

Zachary: It would probably help if we stopped talking for a second or two.

Mary: First I have a question for all three of you. What makes you cringe?

Zachary: When people find out I’m Scottish and immediately make a sheep joke.

Martin: Y’know, I’ve not seen a sheep up close in years.

Zachary: Probably cos they always see you first.

Martin: Nice one. A’right, my turn. I’m dead tired of being either ridiculed or swooned over cos I’m a ginger. It’s just a hair colour, not a marker of moral degradation. Not that I don’t have moral degradation as a weekly goal.

Zachary: Logan, how about you—what makes you cringe?

Logan: Nickelback.

Mary: On that note, can you still discover new music in the afterlife?

Logan: Totally. Funny thing about the afterlife—it’s not as after-y as you’d think.

Zachary: And that’s all you can say without spoilers.

Logan: But I CAN say I’m super excited about the new Mumford & Sons coming out September 25.

Zachary: I’ll give that a listen, but only after the new Frightened Rabbit EP (not to brag, but both release the day before here in the UK).

Mary: Zachary, how did you cope with having to compete with a ghost for Aura’s affections?

Zachary: I coped the usual way lads cope with constant frustration and disappointment.

Logan: Dude, you’re not talking about—

Zachary: Sport. Mostly football. Why, what did you think I was going to say?

Martin: Well, there is the honourary nickname Niall and I have for you, which somehow made it past the editors of SHINE.

Zachary: I’ve no idea what you’re talking about. Isn’t it your turn to answer a question?

Mary: Martin, what drives you crazy about Zach?

Martin: Ach, where to begin? Let’s take a journey through a typical day with Zachary Moore. He’s pure crabbit in the morning until after his fourth cup of tea, as likely to bite yer heid off as say “Hiya.”

Zachary: I’m not a morning person, it’s true.

Martin: And he’ll never ask for help when he needs it. Or admit when he’s wrong.

Zachary: I did admit it, that one time I actually was wrong.

Martin: But the most infuriating thing about Zachary is that even after all the hell he’s been through, he’s still a good guy. It’s inhuman. Also, there are some weeks when he only sleeps an hour or two a night, but he’s still by far the best-looking lad in Glasgow. I should know—I’ve ranked them all.

Zachary: You’re too kind.

Martin: There’s no such thing as too kind—you’ve taught me that, ya wee bastard.

Logan: Guys, get a room, OK? Oh wait, you already did, literally. Which Aura is incredibly understanding about, I might add.

Zachary: Thanks. There’s no way THAT could be misinterpreted.

Mary: So Logan, what most do you miss about the physical world?

Logan: It’s a tie between kissing Aura and playing guitar. But over time the guitar probably wins.

Zachary: How’s that possible?

Logan: It’s hard to let go of someone you love, but being dead is pretty much the definition of “no future.” So hanging on to Aura is just cruel to both of us.

Zachary: Sorry, mate.

Logan: (shrugs) I also miss pizza.

Mary: Zachary, where in the world would you take Aura to stargaze?

Zachary: They say the mountains of Chile have the world’s clearest skies, and I’ve always wanted to see the southern hemisphere constellations. (gives Logan a guilty look) But honestly, I’d take her to Hawaii.

Logan: So you could see her in a bikini, right?

Zachary: Naw, Hawaii has an amazing set of observatories on Mauna Kea. It also has beautiful scenery and volcanoes, plus plants and animals found nowhere else, and…aye, the bikini kinda wins it.

Martin: Well, this is pure awkward.

Mary: Martin, you’re a bartender. What’s your favorite pub drink?

Martin: In winter I fancy a hot toddy (whisky, sugar, lemon juice and hot water—some people use tea, but I don’t). Generally, though, my tastes are simple: Tennent’s Lager or Crabbie’s Ginger Beer. And Irn Bru for hangovers.

Zachary: I should mention for our American audiences that the drinking age here in Scotland is 18.

Martin: Aye, so when Zach and I tweet about our weekend trips to the pubs and clubs, we’re not being scandalous. Not about the drink, anyway.

Zachary: (checks transcript) I think four pages counts as a marathon blether, so let’s wrap up. Thanks very much to Mary for having us on her blog, and to Jaime at Two Chicks on Books for inviting us in the first place. We love youse!

Logan: And if we haven’t totally weirded y’all out, come follow us on Twitter or visit our tumblr for blog posts on music, television, and random stuff that pops into our heads. We like to talk with readers A LOT about pretty much ANYTHING.

Hmm, I’m ALL CAPSing again, so it’s probably time to go. SEE YA!

Martin: Bye, everyone! Be sure to look for me in the next generation of Bourne films. (“There were never just two.”)

Thanks to Jeri -- she is offering up something special!

Waiting on Wednesday THE UNSPOKEN by SARAH REES BRENNAN @sarahreesbrenna @randomhousekids

Book Description

September 11, 2012 The Lynburn Legacy
Kami Glass is in love with someone she's never met—a boy she's talked to in her head since she was born. This has made her an outsider in the sleepy English town of Sorry-in-the-Vale, but she has learned ways to turn that to her advantage. Her life seems to be in order, until disturbing events begin to occur. There has been screaming in the woods and the manor overlooking the town has lit up for the first time in 10 years. . . . The Lynburn family, who ruled the town a generation ago and who all left without warning, have returned. Now Kami can see that the town she has known and loved all her life is hiding a multitude of secrets—and a murderer. The key to it all just might be the boy in her head. The boy she thought was imaginary is real, and definitely and deliciously dangerous.

About the Author
SARAH REES BRENNAN was born and raised in Ireland by the sea. After college she lived briefly in New York and somehow survived in spite of her habit of hitching lifts in fire engines. Since then she has returned to Ireland to write and use as a home base for future adventures. Her Irish is still woeful, but she feels the books under the desk were worth it.

BOOK REVIEW Enshadowed by Kelly Creagh @simonteen @Kelly_Creagh

Book Description

August 28, 2012
True love takes a twisted turn in the second book of this modern gothic romance trilogy channeling the dark brilliance of Edgar Allan Poe.While Varen remains a prisoner in a perilous dream world where the terrifying stories of Edgar Allan Poe come to life, Isobel travels to Baltimore to confront the dark figure known throughout the world as the Poe Toaster. This man, the same man who once appeared to Isobel in her dreams and abandoned her in Varen’s nightmare world, holds the key to saving Varen.
But when Isobel discovers a way to return to this dream world, she finds herself swept up in a realm that not only holds remnants of Edgar Allan Poe’s presence, but has also now taken on the characteristics of Varen’s innermost self. It is a dark world of fear, terror, and anger.
When Isobel once more encounters Varen, she finds him changed. And now Isobel must face a new adversary—one who also happens to be her greatest love.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Varen is stuck in his dreamworld and Isobel is trying desperately to reach him and rescue him.  After some searching and a tip from her teacher, she tracks down the Poe Toaster and convinces her father to take her to Baltimore and wait for him.   Even though, Izzy is still on major restriction after her Halloween debacle and although she seems to have come through unscathed but she is having major nightmares where she communicates with Varen.  She meets him in a garden consistently through her dreams and relives the same thing over and over again.  Gwen is having similar dreams and tries to help Izzy even though the two are not supposed to talk or meet since her parents blame her for Halloween.

This installment brings in Pinfeathers again, an annoying Reynolds and Lilith, who is evil incarnate and out to ruin Izzy's life.  Then Izzy becomes a reincarnation of Buffy, ok, not really, but she may as well have been.  A cheerleader kicking the butt of paranormal beings.  So, there aren't any real demons here, except Izzy's own.  Gwen helps give Izzy a backbone and unravels the clues that will help lead Izzy to Varen and fight Lilith.

Sigh, there is very little Varen.  I know, that is a bit disappointing but now there is a reason for book three since things are pretty unresolved in the ending of this one.  I really enjoyed reading more about Izzy and I adore Gwen.  Maybe in the next one, I will have more of Gwen and her wonderful comments.  This is probably one of the few young adult books I have read where the parents are actually involved with the main characters.  YAY!  For that point alone, parents should rush out to buy this series for their kids.  There isn't much to worry about in this one, just a bit of kissing and a bit of violence.

A grieving girl meets a boy with mystical powers in this passionate love story.
Growing up on Catalina Island, off the California coast, Scarlett Wenderoth has led a fairly isolated life. After her brother dies, her isolation deepens as she withdraws into herself, shutting out her friends and boyfriend. Her parents, shattered by their own sorrow, fail to notice Scarlett's pain and sudden alarming thinness. Scarlett finds pleasure only on her horse, escaping to the heart of the island on long, solitary rides. One day, as she races around a bend, Scarlett is startled by a boy who raises his hand in warning and says one word: "Stop."

The boy—intense, beautiful—is Will Cohen, a newcomer to the island. For reasons he can't or won't explain, he's drawn to Scarlett and feels compelled to keep her safe. To keep her from wasting away. His meddling irritates Scarlett, though she can't deny her attraction to him. As their relationship blossoms into love, Scarlett's body slowly awakens at Will's touch. But just when her grief begins to ebb, she makes a startling discovery about Will, a discovery he's been grappling with himself. A discovery that threatens to force them apart. Follow this link for an excerpt:
http://shelf-life.ew.com/2012/07/25/p...

Until the day I met John Smith, Number Four, I'd been on the run alone, hiding and fighting to stay alive.

Together, we are much more powerful. But it could only last so long before we had to separate to find the others. . . .

I went to Spain to find Seven, and I found even more, including a tenth member of the Garde who escaped from Lorien alive. Ella is younger than the rest of us, but just as brave. Now we're looking for the others--including John.

But so are they.

They caught Number One in Malaysia.
Number Two in England.
And Number Three in Kenya.
They caught me in New York--but I escaped.
I am Number Six.
They want to finish what they started.
But they'll have to fight us first.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Wow!  What a ride!  This installment picks up right where the second book left off with even more action.  I felt like I was running the whole entire time while reading this book.  The Lorien is learning exactly what the other members of the group have as far as their legacies go in the war to save Earth against the Morgadorians.  I loved finding out that the skills that Nine brings to the them.  The story is told in alternating view points of the members and I have to say I missed Four's dominant voice.  While Six and Seven bond, all of the other members of the Garde really come together for some heart racing action.

I am trying to keep this spoiler free but one thing I will tell you is that you will be guessing until the very end and even then there is a cliffhanger.  SIGH.  Sometimes I really hate it when the author does that.  I had heard that this would be the last book and the series would stand as a trilogy, but NO, that should not happen because there are too many threads left open.  I know some people hate when each character tells the story from their own point of view but it really works in this case.  I know I wanted to skip ahead a bit and find out a bit more of the story to keep the continuity for each one.  Overall, everyone should be pleased with this installment and I really hope there is another one.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Max has been moved almost every year of her life by her journalist mother who now decides she needs to put down roots in order to get into a good college, so she is shipped off to a posh boarding school   This doesn't faze Max much since she is adept at joining the in crowd no matter where she ends up by being a chameleon with sure fire methods of adaptation.  Except this time, Max has trouble making in roads with the snooty people that exist at St. Something.

No one gets her jokes or her, except one guy, and they instantly pair off into coupledom bliss.  So when the guy dumps her, she survives by finding a way to capitalize on it and creates EX INC -- a system of survival for the newly dumped.  With her two BFFs as employees, she embarks on a career to help out the newly single and herself in getting into NYU, the school of her dreams. Then her ex shows up in New York and all of Max's girl power suddenly takes a hit so she devises her own Moment to get over him once and for all.  With the help of her two employees and new BFFs, Max takes on all of the guys who deal this blow to girls everywhere.

There is so much good about this story since it is full of discovering one's self worth and how that guy is just not that important in the big scheme of things.  Most girls know exactly the feeling of an almost death when a break up occurs, so it is wonderful to see Max come into her own and build on that devastating issue while helping others find themselves again. Although Max drops out of high school to overcome the shame she feels at her own meltdown, she does pick herself up and builds on that event to create a new life for herself.  That part did bug me, that she had to leave school because of this guy.  Overall, this is the perfect antidote for any girl being down about a break up since it approaches it with humor and power.  There isn't too much for parents to worry about except some kissing and a few instances of alcohol use.
