Book Trailer Tuesday DEAR TEEN ME @zestbooks

Review DEAR TEEN ME by E. Kristin Anderson & Miranda Kenneally @ZestBooks

Book Description

October 30, 2012

Dear Teen Me includes advice from over 70 YA authors (including Lauren Oliver, Ellen Hopkins, and Nancy Holder, to name a few) to their teenage selves. The letters cover a wide range of topics, including physical abuse, body issues, bullying, friendship, love, and enough insecurities to fill an auditorium. So pick a page, and find out which of your favorite authors had a really bad first kiss? Who found true love at 18? Who wishes he’d had more fun in high school instead of studying so hard? Some authors write diary entries, some write letters, and a few graphic novelists turn their stories into visual art. And whether you hang out with the theater kids, the band geeks, the bad boys, the loners, the class presidents, the delinquents, the jocks, or the nerds, you’ll find friends--and a lot of familiar faces--in the course of Dear Teen Me.

About the Author
Miranda Kenneally is the author of Catching Jordan (fall 2011), Stealing Parker (fall 2012), and Bad, Bad Thing (spring 2013). She is the co-creator of the blog Dear Teen Me. Miranda is represented by Sara Megibow at Nelson Literary Agency.
E. Kristin Anderson is the co-creater of the blog Dear Teen Me. Her poetry has been published worldwide in literary journals. MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

This book is a collection letters written by popular young adult authors to themselves as teens to tell them that essentially, life does get better.  Well, in some cases, it does get way worse than better, but eventually, things do look up.  There are all kinds of confessions involved here, some of my favorite authors have dealt with illness, abuse and more adversaries that make my life look like a fairy tale. Most have been threatened by bullies, a lot have had family members die, suffer from drug abuse or even worse.

I had no idea that these authors had to deal with these situations while growing up.  It is amazing that some survived at all and a lot of them have incorporated their experiences into their work.  It is truly eye opening.  Some of my favorites were from Carrie Jones where she explains that a horrible encounter with a boy ended with her having epilepsy.  The letter from Ilsa Bick was heart rendering as she talks about her father who was the only survivor of a Nazi death camp. There are also a few lighthearted moments where authors name their celebrity crushes.  I wish I would have found the tumblr site for this book before it was released.  I am going to send it to every teen I know.

Giveaway & Review SILENT SONG by RON C. NIETO

The princess of the school, Alice, is keeping a secret that could strip her of her high school fame. She is obsessed with the school’s outcast, Keith, but not just him – his music.

Since the inspiration for the song hit, Keith can’t get it out of his mind. The song must be played; it demands to be played. He knows the music is changing him, but he is unable to stop it.

Music has the ability to move you, enlighten you, and take you to places you have never dreamed of. And this particular piece? It has a life of its own and makes you forget who you really are.

As Keith and Alice learn of one another to the notes of that one perfect tune, they can overlook their roles and discover who they could be together. But they also discover someone else is listening and intends on keeping Keith to herself, possibly for an eternity.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Alice and Keith were childhood friends, although it takes awhile for both of them to remember this fact.  Alice is on the A Team, one of the popular girls with her best friend Anna while Keith is an outcast, a musician with dyed hair and black finger nails.  Nicknamed "Dracula in Drag, Keith doesn't much mind since he has his music and his pride, he pretty much ignores those kids as they ignore him.   When he discovers Alice has been stalking him while he plays music at home, it takes awhile for Alice to connect him to the Keith she once had as a childhood friend.  The two really bond when Alice is cast as the lead in a play and Keith writes the music for it.

As Keith composes the music for the play, mysterious things start to happen to him.  He gets hooked on one song and can't stop playing until Alice breaks the spell.  There is also a mysterious family that has donated props to the school for the play and those appear to be haunted as well.  People all around the pair are acting strange and as the two investigate the props and the music, they become aware of some weird things.

I just adored this quick and easy to read contemporary teen romance with a bit of a ghost story worked into it.  The characters, especially Alice and Keith were people I seemed to know in high school.  These are kids that are trying to make the right choices while growing up and I applaud the author's efforts to write about that while keeping it light and not preachy.  Yes, the kids do a little bit of swearing and there are a few kisses here and there, but everything develops perfectly and naturally.  Sigh, there are not enough of books like this around.  Now, I can't wait for another work by Nieto since this one was pretty close to perfect.

1. What is the first book you remember reading by yourself as a child?

Boy... is this a hard question. I started reading with my mom really soon, and the transition to doing it by myself was quite smooth so I can’t recall the exact title. I do recall that one of the earliest books (series, actually) I read was The Little Vampire, by Angela Sommer-Bodenburg. I still have the whole series shelved! While I think it was rated for kids age 10, I went through it in summer when I was 6 years old. I didn’t mean I read the one book, though—I went through the whole 16 titles in the series. It marked me? I’m sure it did. Did it influence what I’d read in following years and even now? Oh, yes. Does it influence what I write? That’s for my readers to know, I guess.

2. What are you reading right now?

Before I Wake, by Rachel Vincent (it’s actually an audiobook, but it still counts, right?), Building from Ashes by Elizabeth Hunter (that’s an eBook) and King of Thorns (that’s the print). That actually says a lot about my reading: I’m always combining something popular with something indie, something light and fast with something... else. My currently-reading list changes weekly, in any case, and it’s pretty eclectic.

3. How does your garden grow?
Erm. This is a trick question I’m completely missing the point of, right? But, to answer literally: I don’t have a garden, since I live in an apartment. I love plants (especially roses... I bet you hadn’t figured that one out!) but I don’t have much patience to care for them—I spend too much time inside my own head to remember watering! Pets are different, because they actually remind me to come out and eat from time to time (laughs) but the poor plants never stood a chance.

4. What is the last thing you Googled?

At the risk of sounding really self-centered: it was my own book trailer, to make sure it was properly listed and all. But, really, I Google a lot. I’m a firm believer in not bothering to store the info myself when I can just type a few words and find anything I need. I Google books I like, CSS and design tips, research stuff for my novels, research stuff for my job, the weather, what they’ll be showing in TV tonight, what gives at my favorite cinemas... You name it!

5. What makes you cringe?

Spiders. They don’t just make me cringe: they make me scream my lungs out and run for the hills. Ghosts also scare me (which is pretty funny, given) more than normal psychos do. In other cringe-y departments, I have several pet peeves that won’t be named regarding books and music, since those are the most important things in my life. Other than that... I’m a pretty cringe-free person! :)

Book Trailer Tuesday ROAR AND LIVE by VERONICA ROSSI @harperteen @V_Rossibooks

Before Perry and Aria, there was Roar and Liv.

After a childhood spent wandering the borderlands, Roar finally feels like he has a home with the Tides. His best friend Perry is like a brother to him, and Perry's sister, Liv, is the love of his life. But Perry and Liv's unpredictable older brother, Vale, is the Blood Lord of the Tides, and he has never looked kindly on Roar and Liv's union. Normally, Roar couldn't care less about Vale's opinion. But with food running low and conditions worsening every day, Vale's leadership is more vital—and more brutal—than ever. Desperate to protect his tribe, Vale makes a decision that will shatter the life Roar knew and change the fate of the Tides forever.

Set in the harsh but often beautiful world of Veronica Rossi's "unforgettable" Under the Never Sky (Examiner.com), this captivating prequel novella stands on its own for new readers and offers series fans a fascinating look into the character of Roar. Poignant and powerful, Roar and Liv is...

Review HORRID HENRY by Francesca Simon @JabberwockyKids

Book Description

May 24, 2012 Horrid Henry
Four brand new stories in which Horrid Henry makes his own scary movie -- The Undead Demon Monster Who Would Not Die, persuades Peter to hand over his stash of Grump Cards (as a brilliant scheme to get him out of the punishments his parents give him) and spends a weekend at Aunt Ruby's where he has to share a bedroom with his two arch-enemies, Stuck-Up Steve and Bossy Bill. Then when Henry's school decides to have a mini-Olympics, he sets up his own Holympics, with medals for crisp-eating, TV watching, and Burping to the Beat.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Four wonderful tales are compiled into this easy to read chapter book. Horrid Henry has a diabolical plan to scare everyone and when they see his monster movie, people will tremble in fear. Then Henry is off to visit his aunt and his cousin Steve who always gives Henry grief where Henry manages to break a bunk bed. When Henry becomes horridly grumpy, and needs a free pass, he conspires to get one with all of his might. Then at last, Henry decides that he can eat faster than anyone and tries to convince the school that eating should be an Olympic event. The events Henry supports are nothing that the school would ever endorse. The stories are full of humor and told with wit and charm, letting the kids who read about Henry feel a bit naughty themselves.  This should please even the most reluctant male reader.
