A computer science prodigy, Lloyd attended MIT but left a pariah in the eyes of the school’s dean—but a computer physics genius in the eyes of his primary investor. A computer prodigy now himself, Jason is about to learn that the world never waits for you if you have the ability to change it: it will come for you. Detective Bruce Durante has been handed the case of the Comfort Killer, a serial killer so named because he appears to abduct terminally ill patients before returning their corpses to their families in refrigerated coffins. When he picks up the trail, it leads straight to the home of Lloyd Tanner. Jason has been living life through the world of Lloyd’s invention and wishing he could carry on a relationship with Boston, the beautiful girl next door. When his father is murdered and framed as the Comfort Killer, he is brought back to reality in a hurry. Giveaway Review GATED by AMY CHRISTINE PARKER @amychristinepar @randomhousekids

Tour Schedule

Welcome to the Official GATED by Amy Christine Parker Blog Tour

Do the gates keep the unchosen out or the chosen in?
In Mandrodage Meadows, life seems perfect. The members of this isolated suburban community have thrived under Pioneer, the charismatic leader who saved them from their sad, damaged lives. Lyla Hamilton and her parents are original members of the flock. They moved here following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, looking to escape the evil in the world. Now seventeen, Lyla knows certain facts are not to be questioned:
Pioneer is her leader.
Will is her Intended.
The end of the world is near.
Like Noah before him, Pioneer has been told of the imminent destruction of humanity. He says his chosen must arm themselves to fight off the unchosen people, who will surely seek refuge in the compound's underground fortress--the Silo.
Lyla loves her family and friends, but given the choice, she prefers painting to target practice. And lately she'd rather think about a certain boy outside the compound than plan for married life in the Silo with Will. But with the end of days drawing near, she will have to pick up a gun, take a side, and let everyone know where she stands.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Lyla, now seventeen and living with her parents in a planned community called Mandrodage Meadows (run that name through a anagram program), devised by Pioneer, a cult-like leader with extraordinary charisma and organized to be self-sufficient.  The fact that this guy easily quotes Manson or Jim Jones should have been a giant red flag.  Her parents have sheltered her after her sister was kidnapped and while her mother has withdrawn into herself, it has left her vulnerable.

The 20 or so families that have gathered there as the chosen to be saved at the end of the world.  The end is coming sooner than this group imagines. You won't be able to take your eyes of the page while the drama builds and the members of this community start to disintegrate. Even though Lyla senses that something is not right within this group, she seems scared to death of acting out and as you get through the story, her backbone develops. When she meets and outsider boy named Cody, the story really starts to move.   I was really cheering for her by the end of the book.  There are some really scary psychological areas that this book touches upon.

I don't want to give anything away but this story could have been a ripped from the pages of the history of cults and becomes quite the thriller after the initial story set up. I am a rabid viewer of Doomsday Preppers and all of the History Channel documentaries on cults. This story is a riveting combination of those two ideas. Even though this isn't truly a dystopian tale, it does have all of the classic elements but with a more believable idea since these cults do exist and I am sure that this could easily happen and probably has.

Giveaway THE EXEMEUS SCAVENGER HUNT + Q&A with FOLAMI & ABENI MORRIS!

Hello all and welcome to the fifth stop on the Exemeus Scavenger tour.

About The Exemeus:
Her short life was devoted to love and to hate. Love of the man who stole her heart, hate for the man who stole the world. Murdered by the government she swore to destroy, she's been given another chance to make it right. But to save the planet, she needs the help of the most powerful mystic the world has ever seen—unfortunately he hasn’t been born yet.

In a world where fear is the only currency, Dephon has committed the ultimate crime: inspiring hope.
His only goal is to make it safely through ninth grade, but on a post-apocalyptic Earth run by the Treptonian government, it isn’t that simple. Heir to a legendary power, Dephon Johnson is the only threat to the government’s rule. And on Trepton, all threats must be eliminated. When hundreds of assassins are dispatched to neutralize him, Dephon is forced to fight back. His only chance of survival is to enlist the aid of the greatest warrior the world has ever known. The only problem is, she's been dead for 13 years.

About the authors:
Folami and Abeni Morris are a sister-sister writing team. Together they wrote (and rewrote) The Exemeus, somehow managing to accomplish it without murdering one another. Despite their facial similarities, tendency to finish each other’s thoughts and stick up for each other constantly, no, they’re not twins and thus deserve their own individual bio.

 Folami Morris:
Folami grew up in the tiny city of San Mateo Ca, where nothing ever happens and no one ever leaves. She went to Xavier University for undergraduate, getting her B.A in physics and her B.S in Biology. After graduation she returned to California, to live in an even smaller city, where even less happens, Antioch Ca. During this time she escaped the monotony by hanging out with her imaginary friends Hyalee and Dephon, and by writing the Exemeus. She finally escaped to Queens NY and now realizes that quiet and tiny aren’t so bad.

Abeni Morris:
As luck (and logic) would have it, Abeni grew up in the same tiny little town as her sister, then she too escaped to the tinier town of Antioch. She has yet to leave. She received her bachelor’s degree in early childhood development from Cal State East Bay. She is the mom of two amazing kids, who swear that they deserve a percentage of the book proceeds and a ton of the credit. At least she raised dreamers.

PLEASE WELCOME ABENI & FOLAMI TO BOOKHOUNDS!~

1. What is the first book you remember reading by yourself as a child?

Folami and Abeni: We would both have to say Spot and Tippy. Catch us on another day and we might remember the past completely differently, but for today that is our answer.

2. What are you reading right now?

Folami: I have been reading Apollyon for a while. Prepping for the release of the next book is so time consuming that reading has been put on the back burner.

Abeni: I’m reading How to Win Friends and Influence People. I decided to read something a little bit more serious than normal.

3. How does your garden grow?

Folami: Unfortunately, anything green dies in my hands. So my garden is barren. I don’t do too well with money either. Maybe I have a mental block around green, but I digress. To answer your question—It doesn’t grow.

Abeni: I will have to agree. Even my boyfriend has learned to buy me fake flowers. Maybe it’s hereditary.

4. What is the last thing you Googled?

We actually were both googling the same thing which was Kimberly Elise’s last name.

5. What makes you cringe?

Folami: That’s a great question. For me it will be people who don’t spend enough time with their children. Again, my answer to this same question will be different tomorrow.
Abeni: I would have to say bugs and world poverty. It truly can be anything, I cringe pretty easily.

This is open internationally,
but if you are outside the US you will receive the $150 via paypal.

Relic by Renee Collins

After a raging fire consumes her town and kills her parents, Maggie Davis is on her own to protect her younger sister and survive best she can in the Colorado town of Burning Mesa. In Maggie’s world, the bones of long-extinct magical creatures such as dragons and sirens are mined and traded for their residual magical elements, and harnessing these relics’ powers allows the user to wield fire, turn invisible, or heal even the worst of injuries.

Working in a local saloon, Maggie befriends the spirited showgirl Adelaide and falls for the roguish cowboy Landon. But when she proves to have a particular skill at harnessing the relics’ powers, Maggie is whisked away to the glamorous hacienda of Álvar Castilla, the wealthy young relic baron who runs Burning Mesa. Though his intentions aren’t always clear, Álvar trains Maggie in the world of relic magic. Everlast by Andria Buchanan

Allie Munroe has only ever wanted to belong, maybe even be well liked. But even though she’s nice and smart and has a couple of friends, she’s still pretty much the invisible girl at school. So when the chance to work with her friends and some of the popular kids on an English project comes up, Allie jumps at the chance to be noticed.

And her plan would have worked out just fine…if they hadn’t been sucked into a magical realm through a dusty old book of fairy tales in the middle of the library.

Now, Allie and her classmates are stuck in Nerissette, a world where karma rules and your social status is determined by what you deserve. Which makes a misfit like Allie the Crown Princess, and her archrival the scullery maid. And the only way out is for Allie to rally and lead the people of Nerissette against the evil forces that threaten their very existence.

GIVEAWAY Back to Reading With Tiffany Truitt WIN an amazing stack of books! @tiffanytruitt

I am so excited to be stopping by today to announce my “Back to Reading,” contest. Like millions of teachers and students, I will be returning back to the classroom, and I thought this needed to be celebrated with a MAJOR book giveaway….and other fun goodies for all my fellow fans of Young Adult Literature.

What Do You Win: One lucky winner will receive copies of the following books (Only US residents need apply)

How Do You Win: Simply stop by my website between Aug 23-26 to enter.

More Goodies: And that’s not all. Entangled Publishing and I are excited to announce that from August 23-26 books 1-2 of The Lost Souls Series (Chosen Ones and The Naturals) will be available for Kindle, Nook, and Apple for only 99 cents. That’s right.  For less than a dollar, you can join the world of Tess and James before the final book in the trilogy hits store in April 2014.

Life is bleak but uncomplicated for sixteen-year-old Tess, living in a not-too-distant future where the government, faced with humanity's extinction, created the Chosen Ones, artificial beings who are extraordinarily beautiful, unbelievably strong, and unabashedly deadly.
When Tess begins work at Templeton, a Chosen Ones training facility, she meets James, and the attraction is immediate in its intensity, overwhelming in its danger. But there is more to Templeton than Tess ever knew. Can she stand against her oppressors, even if it means giving up the only happiness in her life?

Ripped away from those she loves most, Tess is heartbroken as her small band of travelers reaches the Isolationist camp in the mysterious and barren Middlelands. Desperate to be reunited with James, the forbidden chosen one who stole her heart, she wants nothing to do with the rough Isolationists, who are without allegiance in the war between the Westerners and Easterners. But having their protection, especially for someone as powerful as Tess, may come at a cost.
When James returns, Tess’s world once again feels complete—until she discovers her sister, Louisa, has taken up her old post at Templeton, the dangerous chosen ones training center and the site of Tess’s loss of innocence. Tess will do anything to protect her loved ones—but will the price be more than she can give?
This second book in Tiffany Truitt’s dystopian series is a thought-provoking, thrilling story that asks who the true enemy really is—the chosen ones who are different, or the naturals…who are just like us.

Need more enticement?
Below you will find an excerpt from book three,
The Creators.

Somewhere, James was just as trapped as I was.
I thought of the morning when we lay with each other, curled against one another, never beginning and never ending. How we’d stayed like that till the sun began to rise.
James had reached down and pulled me off the ground. He wore a satisfied grin on his face. “Someone is mighty proud of himself,” I teased.
He laughed. It bounced through the forest, calling it awake. Readying it for the day. “I’m just insanely happy.”
I stood on the tips of my toes and kissed him gently on his scar. “I’m insanely happy too,” I whispered.
James looked down at me, and I was lost all over again. I would never tire of looking into those mismatched eyes. They didn’t make him different. They made him him. He chuckled as he reached over and pulled a leaf from my tangled hair. “They’ll know just by looking at you that we’ve been up to no good.”
“No good?” I purred. “I thought it was very, very good.”
James growled and lifted me into the air. I wrapped my legs around his waist as he pressed his lips hungrily against mine. I moved my hands to his hair, curling my fingers into it, attaching myself to him. I never wanted to let go. Every part of me ached to be touched by him, and every part of me ached to touch him right back.
“Do you know how much I love you?” he breathed into the base of my neck. His lips fluttered against my skin.
I nodded, kissing the top of his head. “As much as I love you.”
James slowly put my feet back on the ground. He cradled my face in his hands. “That will never change. No matter what.”
I looked deep into his eyes. “I know.” Because I did. It was one of life’s few assurances. I would always love James.
I pressed my lips once again to his scar. “I adore this scar,” I whispered, unable to hide the smile that seemed etched on my face all morning.
“You’re enough to drive a man crazy,” he said The tremble of his voice caused my toes to curl. I wanted him again. And again. And again.
My fingers traced the waist of his pants. “Tonight?” I said, knowing full well it was a promise that I probably wouldn’t be able to keep.
James grabbed my hand and brought it to his lips. “Tonight,” he echoed.
As the sun climb higher into the sky, I knew our moment was coming to an end. James reached down and placed his hand over my heart. “Thank you,” he said.
“For what?” I asked, my voice choked with emotion.
            “For everything.”
As the memory slipped away, I looked back up at the night sky. Praying and hoping that James knew how much I wanted to thank him too.

            For everything.

Authors Are Rockstars! GENNIFER ALBIN author of CREWEL @GenniferAlbin @FierceReads #Giveaway

Hosted by Fikshun & Two Chicks on Books

SQUEEEEE!!!!

When I first read the description of CREWEL, I knew I really wanted to read it. I wasn't wrong, it was one of my favorite reads last year. Crewel was one of those books that captured my attention immediately and left me wanting more. I pretty much stalked Gennifer online, quietly, of course, since I am probably old enough to be her mother and really, it wouldn't look good to get a restraining order at my age. I did find her at the Los Angeles Times Book Fest in May, 2013 and waited in the sun for her panel. She has amazing skin which  makes me very jealous.  At least, I wasn't the oldest one hanging out there! Gennifer's writing is just captivating to meand takes you to a wonderful place!   Below is some video of her panel at there with Cornelia Funke and Mark Frost. Yeah, I know, I think I messed up the upload to YouTube and the clips aren't in order, but you get the idea!

Incapable. Awkward. Artless.
That’s what the other girls whisper behind her back. But sixteen-year-old Adelice Lewys has a secret: She wants to fail.

Gifted with the ability to weave time with matter, she’s exactly what the Guild is looking for, and in the world of Arras, being chosen to work the looms is everything a girl could want. It means privilege, eternal beauty, and being something other than a secretary. It also means the power to manipulate the very fabric of reality. But if controlling what people eat, where they live, and how many children they have is the price of having it all, Adelice isn’t interested.
Not that her feelings matter, because she slipped and used her hidden talent for a moment. Now she has one hour to eat her mom’s overcooked pot roast. One hour to listen to her sister’s academy gossip and laugh at her dad’s jokes. One hour to pretend everything’s okay. And one hour to escape.
Because tonight, they’ll come for her

Life. Possibility. Choice.
All taken from Adelice by the Guild—until she took them back.
But amid the splendid ruins of Earth, Adelice discovers how dangerous freedom can be. Hunted by soulless Remnants sent by Cormac Patton and the Guild, Adelice finds a world that’s far from deserted. Although allies are easy to find on Earth, knowing who to trust isn’t. Because everyone has secrets, especially those Adelice loves most. Secrets they would kill to protect. Secrets that will redefine each of them. Torn between two brothers and two worlds, Adelice must choose what to fight for.
In this thrilling sequel to Crewel, Adelice is about to learn how tangled up her past and future really are. From Gennifer's Website
Gennifer Albin holds a Masters degree in English Literature from the University of Missouri. A recovering academic, she turned to writing her own books. Gennifer can be found in coffee shops, dreaming up new worlds. She lives in Washington with her family.
Long (and slightly more interesting) bio:
A former academic with a specialization in 18th century women’s studies, Gennifer Albin gave up teaching—both at the high school and college levels—to raise her children at home. But when the economy tanked, Gennifer and her husband soon found themselves filing for bankruptcy after struggling through his unemployment. Rock bottom turned into the foundation on which she decided to rewrite her life.

Gennifer combined her love of writing with her fascination for a surrealist painting by Remedios Varo, Embroidering the Earth’s Mantle. The painting of girls creating the world caused her to weave a tale in her mind. Lack of a home computer didn’t deter her, and she wrote the first draft on public library computers as the system counted down the seventy minutes she was allowed to work.

With the support of her family, Gennifer spun Crewel, a sweeping literary novel that follows sixteen-year-old Adelice Lewys as she navigates a treacherous world where women are cultivated into femme fatales, called Spinsters, to weave the very fabric of life. Pitched as Mad Men meets The Handmaid’s Tale and The Hunger Games, Crewel received seven agent offers of representation by May and sold at auction between five houses within a week of submission to editors.

Gennifer recalls the most poignant part of her whirlwind—having to sell her beloved antique books to keep food on the table. She now writes full-time while happily rebuilding her library in Washington with the help of her ridiculously supportive husband, two young children, and a Tuesday cat. She is the founder of theconnectedmom.com, a blog about positive parenting for modern mothers, and she moderates a private group for write-at-home moms, or WrAHMs, offering advice, support, and insight into the complexities of writing while raising young children. PLEASE WELCOME GENNIFER TO BOOKHOUNDS YA

1. What is the first book you remember reading by yourself as a child?

The very first book I remember was one of those basic readers they teach you with in Kindergarten and 1st grade. The cover was orange, and clearly, the plot was riveting because I remember nothing else. As soon as I had it down, I skipped picture books and chapter books and jumped straight to Little House in the Big Woods and Sweet Valley High in 2nd grade. That explains a lot actually now that I think about it.

2. What are you reading right now?

A few books for other authors, Opera Anecdotes, and I just picked up Outlander after a half dozen people recommended it to me in the same week. My reading tastes are teasingly diverse.

3. How does your garden grow?

With pretty maids all in a row. They’re opressed and fighting a dystopian regime, but they look fabulous!

(this is the best EVER answer to this question ~Mary)

4. What is the last thing you Googled?

Something that probably put me on an FBI watchlist. (Hey, Agent Bristow, you are rocking that suit today.)

5. What makes you cringe?

Embarrassment humor. You know when someone sticks their foot in their mouth or gets caught naked in the kitchen with a pie? I can’t handle it. Probably because I’m constantly making an ass out of myself.
